the 1930s
For the 1931/32 season, the programme remained essentially the same. The inside front cover was once again given over to split adverts.
Marketing departments weren’t the ultra-efficient teams we see today and the centre advert in the Crystal Palace issue on September 9th 1931 sated ‘This space is reserved for Jaegar’s advert’.
The entire back page was given over to a plea on behalf of the North Stand Fund. The fund was opened in 1930, to raise funds for the building of a roof over three-quarters of the north terracing. The original cost of the project was £1,075 but this rose to £1,325 when Hove Corporation insisted on deeper foundations. Work commenced towards the end of the year and by January 1931 the first part was ready. The Supporters’ Club raised £625 towards the scheme but on completion, there was still £525 outstanding. Two benefit matches were held, which raised £100.
Supporters were asked ‘Don’t forget your 1d on the ball. £400 still owing’. The remaining funds were raised over the next few years.
