Many supplements have been issued over the years, to commemorate many of the important milestones in Albion’s history.
Here are those that I have in my collection
Sporting Mail - 1935
Issued to coincide with Albion’s FA Cup tie with Arsenal on 12th January 1935. The Gunners were one of the foremost clubs in the country and with Albion in Division Three (South), this was a huge occasion, expected to attract thousands of people to the town. This is a fascinating glimpse into Brighton life in the mid-1930s, with a number of articles and commentary around the game. The scans of this magnificent magazine were provided by Peter Irvine of the Albion Heritage Society.
On the pitch, Albion gave a good account of themselves, but ended up losing 2-0. Fears over the potential huge influx of fans put many people off from attending and in the end, only 22,343 saw the game.
Prior to the fixture, the two teams trained together on the Goldstone pitch with Arsenal on their way to a third successive League title. They field ten current internationals, including seven of the England team that had beaten Italy in the so called ‘Battle of Highbury’.
The Gunners won with goals scored late in each half, Joe Hulme at 45 minutes and Ted Drake two minutes from time.
